Greetings Blog-readers. Here is the manifesto of the Almond Boneless Chicken Blog.
For all you suckaz who grew up in South East Michigan or close enough to Detroit to know the joys of Almond Boneless Chicken (aka ABC, or War Su Gai): a Chinese food dish only common to the resturaunts owned by 5-6th Generation Cantonese-Americans residing in the Detroit area. Our family still makes a tradition out of this meal on Christmas Eve. If you know what ABC chicken is you will know what it means to load up on carbs (white rice and very starchy dinner rolls) and protein (crispy fried boneless chicken breast). You will also have been exposed to a number of other influences:
- A very vibrant music scene featuring all manner of influences
- A sports scene where years of frustration are occassionaly rewarded with life-affirming championships (but not in that too-precious Boston sports scene way . . . lets put it this way . . . Ken Burns would have his ass kicked if he tried to use the urinal trough at Tiger Stadium)
- Bitter, frustrating winters and glorious summers.
- The US auto industry (the real one - not that jive-ass Alabama/Red State auto industry), which is also subject to bitter frustrating recessions and glorious periods of good business usually corresponding to low gas costs.
- Intense distrust, jealousy and loathing of NY and LA
- A strong do it yourself culture (not shared by this writer)
- A odd ethnic mix (Albanian, Arab-Christian, Canadian, Yemeni, Greek, Armenian along with Taylortuckians, African-Americans, Dutch-Calvinists).
In this blog I'll write about my musings on:
- Detroit Tigers
- Detroit Red Wings
- Detroit Pistons
- Michigan Wolverines
- Detroit Lions
- And any other issue of interest to the people of the land of Almond Boneless Chicken.
